Veteran actor Mammootty, who is still one of the busiest actors in the Malayalam film industry—recently took to Facebook and confirmed that he will indeed be starring in a period film based on the medieval festival of Maamaankam. He went on to add that the film will be directed by Sanjeev Pillai, who has been researching the topic for nearly 12 years.

“Happy to be part of ‘Maamaankam’ which chronicles the journey of the legendary “Chaaverukal” of Valluvanadu. The biggest film I have done so far and it has an outstanding screenplay by debutante director Sajeev Pillai, who has written it after 12 years of research. The film is set in the late 17th century. We are grateful to the legendary Navodaya for their large-heartedness in allowing us to use their prestigious title ‘Maamaankam’. Venu Kunnampilly is producing the film under the banner of Kavya Films. The film will see a big star cast along with me and employing internationally renowned technicians. Will update you more about ‘Maamaankam’… Happy Diwali to you all,” he added.

Well, this is some good news and is bound to create a buzz amongst fans.

On a related note, Mammookka fans have plenty to look forward to in the days to come. At present, besides ‘Maamaankam’, he also has ‘Streetlights’ and ‘Uncle’ in his kitty.  ‘Streetlights’ is a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual and features him in the role of a cop. On the other hand, ‘Uncle’ is a drama and features him in a new avatar.
