Director Kamal is working on the biopic on celebrated poet and author Kamala Surayya, also known as Madhavi Kutty. The director initially roped in Bollywood actor Vidya Balan for the lead role but she opted out of the project recently because of unknown reasons. Manju Warrier replaced Vidya Balan in the lead role and the shooting of the film is started finally.

Director Kamal is keen to have Hindi songs in the film and hence roped in renowned poet/lyricist Gulzar and composer Taufiq Quershi, brother of Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, to work on two Hindi songs in the film. Gulzar will pen down the lyrics while Taufiq Qureshi will compose both the Hindi songs.

Speaking about the developments Kamal said, “Yes, we have finished recording both of these Hindi songs. The songs are melodies, and one of them will be sung by Javed Ali. The movie has a few sequences set in North India, for instance, in Kolkata where the writer grew up. I can’t reveal more about the reasons of their inclusion at the moment.”

The Malayalam songs are composed by M Jayachandran and the lyrics are written by Rafeeq Ahmed.

Author Kamala Surayya, AKA Madhavi Kutty, was born in a Nair family and later embraced Islam in 1999. Rumours were doing rounds that she converted because she was promised by one Sadiq Ali to marry her if she embraces Islam and this turned out to be controversial. Kamala also launched a political party named Lok Seva Party and contested in the 1984 elections which she lost.
