Popular Malayalam magazine, Gruhalakshmi, recently featured Malayalam actor-model Gilu Joseph which has the actor breastfeeding a baby with an intent to break the stereotypes around breastfeeding in open public. The campaign was started by the magazine to break the myth around it and to bring awareness amongst people about breastfeeding their babies. Word about this campaign and Gilu Joseph spread like fire and has also drawn flak from few sections of people. An advocate in in Kollam, Kerala, has now filed a legal case against the Magazine for featuring a woman breastfeeding her child. The cases are filed against only the magazine and not against Gilu Joseph however, the actor is also being criticised for going bold.
“I have only done things that I have believed is right for me. I must have failed, but I have no regrets. Women should breastfeed freely, without any sense of fear or inhibition and that is my message in the article too, but people began criticising even without reading what I had to say,” Gilu Joseph told Indian Express. Social media is witnessing a mixed response for this campaign and the actor receiving support and criticism too from few.
Gilu Joseph says that she had to fight a lot of criticism to do this which started from home – her mother and sister. “I am extremely proud of my body and only I exercise rights over it. I only do things that I think is right for me, which is why I had no qualms in taking up this project,” Gilu Joseph told the magazine in an interview. The campaign has now become viral on social media and many celebrities are supporting the cause.
With bold thoughts, Gilu Joseph has made it clear that there is nothing wrong with feeding your baby in public, which is often viewed sexually, she says. “It is a problem to interpret this sexually. Isn’t it a beautiful thing, friends? Why do you think it is wrong? Which god will be angry if you feed your child,” Gilu was quoted as saying by the magazine. Gilu Joseph is an air-hostess by profession and has films like Nonsense, Abrahaminte Santhathigal and Parole up for release this year.

Was that actually the need of the hour???
Do we truly face such an issue in Kerala???
&is that how u breastfeed???
Flinging off a side completely???
And the expression on her face—–is there even a tinge of motherhood???
If she loved her body and is proud of it ther were better means of expression…….
Sad excuse of a woman!!!

Stupid people who are supporting this photo, how many of you would remove your would sit in public like that even if no-one stares at you. And by the way the model is a Christian. Why didn’t she chose to wear a cross may be the black tent which is fashion in Kerala these days.

Such small minded mentality. Why was not a case filed when some bollywood “stud” posed topless to show off his muscular chest region? Girls went ooh aah and boys went “duuudde”. Aunties went “perfect fit for my daughter, uncles did not look up from their bifocals. Honestly, it is merely a baby eating his food! And that is that! Like if it were a baby drinking formula, would they go crying to the judiciary system? Because of this mentality, the status of women as equals (rather superiors) is getting worse. Whatever happened to ideologies around Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s work and emancipation of women!
Isn’t it liberation to feed your child, be working and have your pics taken?
How can this mindset around “special” female body parts be changed?

Breastfeeding your child is not crass. Putting it up on coverpage to reach millions of women is not crass.
People should get their hands and heads out of their pants.
The government and WHO/UNICEF is trying so hard to make hospitals and mothers understand importance of breastfeeding to arrest infant death, protect child from diseases and malnutrition. They are all shouting from all platforms for mothers to breastfeed, for hospitals to take care but no one speaks. Here this one very natural picture and everyone’s heads start thinking sex. SICK SOCIETY. SICK MEN.

There are many ways to promote breastfeeding and this is not the way to promote it . Go to maternity hospitals and educate women about this subject, start classes for pregnant mothers and educate mothers . In our society, did you ever think how your child would feel to live with this picture in public?.
