Malayalam Mega Star Mammootty will soon team up with ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan for a film titled ‘Kunjali Marakkar’. Mammotty will play the single-eyed Kunjali Marakkar in the film and the film is set to be released in mid-2018. And in an interesting development, The Complete Actor Mohanlal too will play a similar role in one of his upcoming movies which will be directed by popular filmmaker Priyadarshan. The two had last come together for ‘Oppam’ which turned out to be a superhit in Malayalam. And the duo is now all set to team up again for this yet to be titled film.

We wanted to do a big film together next. As a result, we have been working on Kunjali Marikkar for some time. The research for the film is ongoing and it would take at least 10 months for that to complete,” Priyadarshan told TOI speaking about this film.

Kunjali Marikkar name was given to the Muslim navy chief of Zamorin (Samoothiri) who was the Hindu king of Calicut in the 16th Century. With two films on this historical character in the pipeline, the expectations on the film will be quite high to see the kind of research the makers would do for the film.

With these two stars of Malayalam cinema working on similar, it will interesting to see what part of the story these two stars would opt to portray in their films. 2018 seems to have a lot of exciting films in the pipeline for Malayalam movie-buffs.
