In early 90s, Mammootty’s Kottayam Kunjachan changed the direction of the megastar’s career in Malayalam after the film a huge success. Touted to be an action-comedy, Kottayam Kunjachan is directed by T.S.Suresh Babu and had Mammootty playing the titular role. The film unveiled an unseen comic side of Mammootty which was one of the main reasons for Kottayam Kunjachan to become a superhit film. And according to latest developments, Malayalam movie-buffs might be in for a treat. Reports reveal that Kottayam Kunjachan will soon get a sequel and will be titled Kottayam Kunjachan 2, which will be directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas who made Aadu and Aadu 2. Midhun, now being termed as Master of Sequels, confirmed this development at a recent event related to his latest release Aadu 2. “Mammukka will play the titular role in the movie. It will be yet-another story in Kunjachan’s life,” Midhun Manuel Thomas was quoted as saying by a report in Times of India.
Kottayam Kunjachan released in 1990 and also starred, besides Mammootty, Ranjini, Innocent, KPAC Lalitha, Sukumaran, Babu Antony and Prathapachandran appearing in pivotal roles. Kottayam Kunjachan had a terrific run in theatres and was screened for more than 100 days in theatres across Kerala, making it a blockbuster hit back then. Kottayam Kunjachan had all the characters speaking in the native Kottayam style which appealed to the audiences and made it a hit flick. The titular character, Kunjachan, played by Mammotty had become very famous for the typical Kottayam Nasrani attitude, as many say. And with the sequel for Kottayam Kunjachan in the pipeline, Malayalam audiences will be much excited about it and will be more eager to know more details about it.
Mammootty has a slew of films up his sleeve, besides Kottayam Kunjachan 2, which includes an intense drama, Parole, a teaser of which was released recently.
