The Complete Actor Mohanlal has a slew of films under his belt this year which includes the period drama Marakkar. Said to be based on the first naval officers of Kerala, Marakkar will have the veteran actor portraying the titular role and will be directed by his good friend Priyadarshan. The film is yet to go on floors and is currently under the pre-production stage. Mohanlal says that the film will be made on a huge scale and will also have PAN Indian appeal.
“Priyan has been working for a long time on the movie. It needs a lot of preparation – before and after filming. Kunjali Marakkar is one of the first naval commanders of Kerala. He was an expert at his craft. He started off as a pirate and then became a trusted aide of the Zamorins as he helped drive away the Portuguese,” Mohanlal told Times of India.
The veteran actor further says that the film will have actors from various other industries too. “It’s part fiction too because not much has been documented about those years of history. The movie will have a pan Indian appeal with actors from Bollywood, Telugu being part of it as well Chinese and Arabic actors,” he added further. It is not clear yet as to when the shooting of the film will go on floors.
Marakkar is said to be inspired by the life of Kunjali Marakkar IV who was a 16th century Muslim Naval officer. Mohanlal would be seen portraying this role for which he is yet to shoot. And according to latest reports, Tollywood top star Akkineni Nagarjuna too would be seen playing an important role in Marakkar. It is not clear yet as to what role Nagarjuna would be playing in this thriller which is set in the 1600s. An official confirmation is awaited for regarding Nagarjuna’s casting in Marakkar.
