Recently, Malayalam film industry found itself divided on a controversy which was about few lines in the film ‘Kasaba’ which starred Mammootty in the lead role. It all started when actress Parvathy had said that the way a police officer speaks to his senior woman police officer is incorrect and is shown in poor light. Parvathy said that she was taken aback with the way the lines were penned down and also added that women need to portrayed in a fat better way in cinema. Post her speech, Parvathy faced abuses, threats and trolls online on social media which lead the actress to register a complaint against few users. Police officials even arrested couple of men in Kerala who threatened her on social media. Reacting to the whole situation, the actress in the scene, Jyoti Shah, has now said that there is nothing wrong in the scene in the film and it only portrayed what is happening in society.
“Things like this happen in our society and shouldn’t an actor play both positive and negative roles? Women may have had encountered similar scenes like the one in Kasaba. I think be it negative or positive, a film should deal with all the aspects of our society. The character in Kasaba too is such a person. So just like every human being, the character of Rajan Zacharia played by Mammootty too has some flaws in his role,” Jyoti Shah told a leading Malayalam website. Jyoti, when asked if she was uncomfortable or hesitant to do the scene replied, “Not at all. We are actors and I wouldn’t have acted in that scene if I had found anything wrong in it.”
Malayalam film industry has been divided on this whole issue with not many people reacting to the issue. Reacting to the situation and the abuses on Parvathy, actor Mammootty had said, “I have not entrusted to reply on my behalf or to react to issues.”
