During a legendary career that spans over four decades, the veteran has won the love of fans courtesy his stylish personality, gripping performances, and versatility as a performer. Furthermore, he has won several accolades and proved that he is the pride of Malayalam cinema. Today, as the megastar turns a year older, we take a closer look at his life and celebrate what has been a remarkable career.
Mammootty was born into a middle-class Muslim family in 1951 and received his early education at a government high school. After completing his pre-degree course, he graduated with LLB from the Government Law College Ernakulam and practiced law for two years. In 1979, he played the lead role in ‘Devalokam’. However, it never hit screens. He ultimately got noticed when he delivered a commendable performance alongside Sukumaran in the 1981 release ‘Sphodanam’.
Thereafter, he slowly but surely established himself as a force to be reckoned with and delivered successful films such as ‘Mathilukal’ and ‘Oru Vadakkan Veergatha’ along the way. Interestingly, he has also acted in some non-Malayalam films as well. The most noteworthy of them is the Mani Ratnam-directed classic ‘Thalapathy’.
On the personal side of things, he has been married to Sulfath Kutty since 1979. Their son Dulquer Salmaan too is a noted actor and has starred in several popular films.
