The fast-rising Sivakarthikeyan’s latest/upcoming release ‘Velaikkaran’ has already created quite a music amongst fans thanks to its catchy songs. And, the one number in particular that has become the talk of K-town is ‘Iraiva’. Composed by Anirudh Chander, it has been sung by the young rockstar and the highly talented Jonita Gandhi.
During a recent exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Jonita opened up about her rapport with the ‘Kolaveri Di’ sensation as well as her tryst with Tamil music.
How was the experience of working with Anirudh?
It was fun and inspiring. He’s so hands-on with his work and so talented! I’m glad we were able to squeeze in the collab on short notice and hope for more opportunities to work together in future.
How challenging is it to sing in Tamil? Have you picked up the language?
In the beginning, it was really hard because I had no idea where to start with breaking down the sounds. But it’s been a few years now and I’ve developed sort of a legend to help me get the different sounds correct. I’ve learned a few common words here and there and what they mean, but not enough to say I understand the language.
Your favourite music directors from the South/Tamil industry?
It’s hard to pick and choose favourites because each music director brings something unique to the music industry. AR Rahman has been one of my idols for as long as I can remember, and I’m so grateful for the working relationship we share. There are several others who I discovered a bit later, in addition to Anirudh, who have put out some great music, like Leon James, Santhosh Narayanan and D. Imman.
One recent Tamil song you heard and liked.
“Maaruvaarthai” by Darbuka Siva, Thamarai & Sid Sreeram. I believe it is from the upcoming Gautham Menon film.
Velaikkaran will be released around X mas. So, what is the one wish you want Santa to fulfil this festive season?
I wish for Santa to grant everyone a happy holiday season, spent merrily with their friends and families, and a wonderful new year ahead!
