2017 was undoubtedly a terrific year for fans of Tamil cinema as we saw several A-list stars—right from Vijay to his professional Ajith—deliver the goods at the box office and prove that they are synonyms for commercial success. Moreover, last year we also saw relatively smaller films hold their own at the ticket window. And, it seems that 2018—which is finally upon us will be even more exciting than the year gone by. Believe it or not, sequels to quite a few popular films are slated to hit screens this year. Today, let us take a look at the big sequels lined up for release in 2018.
2.0: A sequel to the 2010 blockbuster ‘Enthiran’, ‘2.0’ is tout to be a sci-fi thriller and will see Rajinikanth reprise his ‘Chitti’ character from the first part. A Shankar directorial, it is tipped to be an absolute visual treat for movie buffs. Besides Rajini, it also features Akshay Kumar in the lead. Akki will be playing the antagonist in what is the first Tamil film of his career. During the ‘2.0’ audio launch in Dubai, Akshay had said that working on the film was a learning experience for him.
If all goes as planned, ‘2.0’ will hit screens on `14 April 2018.
Vishwaroopam 2: The long-delayed ‘Vishwaroopam 2’ is a sequel to the 2013 release ‘Vishwaroopam’ and features veteran actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan in the lead. A spy-thriller, it is slated to finally hit screens this year and will touch upon several hard-hitting subject. Sometime ago, Haasan had said that all the characters from the first part—including those who were killed—will be a part of the sequel.
“My producer was multitasking with many films but I have now taken over the responsibility of taking my product to the audience. All the actors are returning, even those who died in the first part. The surprise new addition is Waheeda Rehman ji,” he had told a leading daily.
Besides Haasan, it also features Andrea Jeremiah in the lead.
Aramm 2: In November, the much-loved Nayanthara became the toast of K-town when she delivered a solid performance in ‘Aramm’ and proved that she truly is the ‘Thalaivi’ of Tamil cinema. In it, she essayed the role of a collector and did full justice to it. The film not only impressed movie buffs but members of the film fraternity as well. Praising it, actress Amala Paul had said that it served as a reminder of how good content matters.
Shortly after its successful release, the makers had confirmed that a sequel would be made and it would be even more hard-hitting than the first part.
Indian 2: As the title suggests, ‘Indian 2’ is a sequel to the 1996 hit ‘Indian’ which had Kamal Haasan in the lead. Just like the original version, the sequel too will be helmed by Shankar and will deal with a burning social issue. Initially, Dil Raju was going to produce it, however, he opted out. Interestingly, Haasan has been in the news of late because of his impending political debut and this could add to the buzz surrounding ‘Indian 2’.
Maari 2: Dhanush’s 2015 release ‘Maari’ was an absolute treat for his die-hard fans as it featured him in a massy and raw avatar that he carried off like a boss. The film also grabbed eyeballs courtesy his chemistry with Kajal Aggarwal. Its sequel ‘Maari 2’ is likely to be released in 2018 and could turn out to be even massier than the first part. Interestingly, the sequel will see Sai Pallavi and not Kajal Aggarwal play the female lead and will feature music from Yuvan Shankar Raja. Sai Pallavi has been on a roll of late and seeing her opposite D will be a treat for movie buffs.
Saamy Square: In 2003, the dashing Vikram delivered a solid performance in the action-drama ‘Saamy’ and gave strong proof of his abilities as an actor. Now, nearly 15 years later, its sequel ‘Saamy Square’ is all set to hit screens much to the delight for fans, Besides Vikram, the film also features Keethy Suresh in the lead. Trisha too was a part of ‘Saamy Square’ but opted out citing creative differences.
