Finally, the 48-day-long strike of Kollywood has been finally called off. The strike that had put the Tamil film industry to a grinding halt finally, has been called off. It’s kind of relief for many filmmakers, who have been waiting to release their films.
The strike was called on March 1 to protest issues affecting the revenue share of producers, especially the rate of the Virtual Print Fee charged on the digital distribution of films through multiplexes and single screens.
Well, there were no releases for the Tamil New Year, a much-coveted date at the box office. But no worries, finally many films will see daylight.
Here’s a list of movies that we are looking forward to:
Imaikkaa Nodigal: Ajay Gnanamuthu is coming back with an action thriller Imaikkaa Nodigal. It is one of the Tamil films that audience is looking forward to. Written and directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, the film also stars Atharvaa, Nayanthara and Raashi Khanna in pivotal roles. The film is currently at the technical completion stage. Also, once the censor process gets completed, the team will make an official announcement on the release date. The film will also see Bollywood’s acclaimed director Anurag Kashyap.
Mahanati/Nadigaiyar Thilagam: This is one of the most talked about biopic in Tamil and Telugu cinema. The film will showcase the life of the yesteryear Telugu actress Savithri. Directed by Nag Ashwin, Mahanati will feature Keerthy Suresh as Savitri while Dulquer Salmaan will be seen playing Gemini Ganesan. Mahanati is slated to be released on May 9th, 2018 worldwide and will be one of the most watched out for film in Tollywood this year.
Vishwaroopam 2: Kamal Haasan’s espionage thriller Vishwaroopam will always be remembered for numerous reasons. Well, the makers are all set to make a comeback with the sequel. The much-awaited trailer of Vishwaroopam 2 is likely to be out as the strike has been finally called off. Reportedly, the sequel is all set to hit the screens this summer. The film has got all clearance by CBFC with U’A certificate. The makers are only waiting to lock the release date.
Irumbu Thirai: Irumbu Thirai brings Vishal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu together for the first time, which is one of the highlights of the film. The film was expected to release in January this year but has been postponing. The makers are expected to lock the release date soon.
Kaala: Among the numerous films affected by the strike is the Rajinikanth-starrer Kaala. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the Mumbai-set film is now likely to be released in June.
