BJP leader objects to GST jokes in Vijay’s Mersal, calls it a ‘political move’

According to reports, BJP has taken offence to some scenes in ‘Mersal’ which make fun of the central government’s Digital India initiative as well as the recently-implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST). Talking about the issue, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundarrajan said that the Vijay was spreading ‘misinformation’ about the schemes as he is keen to enter politics.

“I haven’t seen the movie, but those who saw the movie say there were factual errors in what was said. The scenes on GST and Digital India have been written in such a way so as to create a wrong impression on the minds of people,” she added.

Tamilisai Soundarrajan also said that filmmakers do have artistic freedom, however, spreading false information is not acceptable as it creates a wrong impression in the minds of people.

“Yes, they do. You don’t have to praise the schemes we have brought in. But to compare India with another country and that too in an incorrect way, would send the wrong message to people here. This is a political move,” she added.

Well, this is a developing situation and it will be worth watching what happens next. On a related note, ‘Mersal’ is touted to be an action-drama and has been directed by Atlee. Besides Vijay, it also has Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, and Samantha Akkineni in the lead. SJ Suryah is also part of the cast and plays the antagonist. The film hit screens on Wednesday and opened to a good response at the box office.
