Noted novelist and film writer Balakumaran passed away in Chennai yesterday and many celebrities from the Tamil film industry paid their last respects to him at his residence. Balakumaran is known for his works in hit films like Baasha, Kaadhalan, Nayakan, Gentleman, Citizen and many other films. The famous line from Rajinikanth’s Baasha – Naan oru dhadava sonna…nooru dhadava sonna maari – was penned by Balakumaran which is to date one of the most favourite to many Tamil cinema lovers. Rajinikanth paid his last respects to Balakumaran at his residence and said that his demise is an irreplaceable loss to the literary world.
“Balakumaran is my close friend. His is an irreparable loss to literary world. His powerful dialogues were huge reasons for Baasha’s big success. I tried to rope him in for some of my other movies as well. But he politely refused saying he is inclined towards literature and spiritualism,” Rajinikanth was quoted as saying by a report in Deccan Chronicle.

Ace lyricist and wrote Vairamuthu said he was shattered when learnt about Balakumaran’s demise. Vairamuthu also said that his writings will remain forever even though if he is not with us. “I am totally shattered when I heard about Balakumaran’s demise. Time has taken away a writer who with his untiring spirit relentlessly wrote. At a time due to technology advancement, when the reading habits in younger generations slowly started vanishing, Balakumaran’s writings pulled them back to reading. Though he is no more, his writings will remain forever,” said the lyricist.
The eminent writer was admitted at a private hospital Chennai and was being treated for breathing problems when he breathed his last. Balakumaran has written scripts and dialogues for many hit films which includes the likes of Kamal Haasan’s Guna and Rajinikanth’s Baasha. The veteran Tamil writer has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan and Kumudam among many others.
