Kamal Haasan is arguably one of the most outspoken stars in the film industry. And, yesterday, he grabbed plenty of attention when he supported Deepika Padukone’s ‘Padmavati’. In his hard-hitting tweet, the veteran actor-filmmaker said that one must respect DP’s freedom and ensure that extremism does not enter any debate.
“I want Ms.Deepika’s head.. saved. Respect it more than her body.Even more her freedom. Do not deny her that. Many communities have apposed my films.Extremism in any debate is deplorable. Wake up cerebral India.Time to think. We’ve said enough. Listen Ma Bharat,’ he wrote on Twitter.
Now, it seems that his comments have not gone down well with BJP leader H Raja. Speaking on the issue, he said that Haasan should not have supported ‘Padmavati’ as the film distorts history. He went on to add that the ‘Ulaga Nayagan’ has a habit of supporting ‘perverted ideas’.
“When you make a film based on a historical event, you should not twist or falsify it. You cannot make a misappropriate dance video of queen Padmavati. Tomorrow, will they make a cinema featuring Mumtaj and Chatrapathi Sivaji dancing together? What shameful act this is? I wonder how Kamal Haasan encouraged this film? I guess Kamal has made it a point to support all perverted ideas. I don’t think this is right. A historical event should never be distorted,” he added.
In case you did not know, ‘Padmavati’ is a historical drama and has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. A Jaipur based group has threatened to stop its release for allegedly insulting the Rajput culture. Similarly, several political leaders to have objected to the film. It was supposed to hit screens on December 1 but got postponed
