Gautham Menon: I got a chance to meet Kamal Haasan early in my career and that was a great breakthrough

Filmmaker Gautham Menon is someone who doesn’t hesitate from trying new concepts and genre in his films, and all his films so far are testimonial to it. Gautham Menon first made the romantic saga Minnale which left audiences thrilled with its narration and fresh approach. And there was no looking back for Gautham Menon. But that’s not the reality! Gautham Menon was at a college event in Coimbatore recently and spoke about what it took for him to get to this stage. “To be frank, I never thought I would become a director. I was an engineering student. One day, I was sitting in my room and took a decision to make films. But, making a movie was not easy. I am very scared even now while making a movie. I don’t even talk much. It’s a great industry to be in but there is a lot of struggle. The film has to reach the target audience,” Gautham Menon was quoted as saying by TOI.

Speaking about what changed the direction of his career, Gautham Menon said, “For instance, Kaakha Kaakha was a huge struggle. I made the film as a first copy. After they saw the first copy, they asked if they could remove the love scenes. That discussion went on for 10 days. But after the movie, Kamal Haasan sir called. That was a turning point in my career. I learnt cinema from him, and a chance to meet him and talk to him was a great breakthrough. It was easier to meet other actors after that.”

Gautham Menon will be seen playing full length role in Goli Soda 2 and will be playing a fierce antagonist. “It was an interesting experience playing a rough villain. When I heard that I was working with people like Samuthirakani, I was kicked about it. I am also working in the Malayalam film Trance with Fahadh Faasil,” Gautham Menon added further.
