Guna, Baasha, Nayakan and many other hit films writer Balakumaran passes away

Prominent novelist and film writer Balakumaran passed away in Chennai today due to illness. The eminent writer was admitted at a private hospital Chennai and was being treated for breathing problems when he breathed his last. Balakumaran has written scripts and dialogues for many hit films which includes the likes of Kamal Haasan’s Guna and Rajinikanth’s Baasha. Rajinikanth’s famous dialogue ‘Naan oru dhadava sonna…nooru dhadava sonna maari’ from Baasha was written by Balakumaran. That dialogue is still a very famous one and is used in many films in various Indian languages. Balakumaran’s dialogues were the highlights of many hit films and elevated many actors’ stardom to a greater height.

Balakumaran is also known for her his novels and short stories contributing to many other weekly books which includes Vikatan. Few of his books which won numerous awards include Sugajeevanam, Irumbhu Kudhiraigal, Kadarpalam and Mercury Pookal. Balakumaran’s contribution to films has largely been in the field of screenplay making and dialogue writing. His skills in crafting the dialogue for any conceivable character are noteworthy in Tamil film industry. The veteran Tamil writer has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan and Kumudam among many others.

Balakumaran has also won Tamil Nadu State Award for his work in Kaadhalan which brought stardom to director Shankar and actor Prabhu Deva. Balakumaran also tried his hands at direction in 1988 with Idhu Namba Aalu which featured Bhagyaraj in the lead role. Balakumaran’s last set of works in Tamil cinema was Dhanush’s Pudupettai and Simbu starrer Manmadhan and Vallavan. The renowned writer has penned down more than 150 books and 100 short stories for various magazines.

Social media has been abuzz with condolence messages after the news of Balakumaran passing away spread. From veteran actor Manobala to many other celebrities, many have mourned his demise.
