I am sure the audience will love ‘Velaikkaran’ and appreciate our monstrous efforts, says art director

Sivakarthikeyan is arguably one of the most talented young stars in the Tamil film industry today. And, at present, he is gearing up for the release of ‘Velaikkaran’. A Mohan Raja directorial, it has already created a buzz amongst fans courtesy its gripping posters and could turn out to be a success when it hits screens on December 22. Interestingly, the slum setup is an integral part of the film and a lot of detailing was done to get it right. During a recent chat with a leading website, art director Muthuraj said that he observed nearly 10-15 slum setups in order to understand the lifestyle prevalent there and add a sense of authenticity to his work.

“I went and saw 10-15 real slums to observe their set ups and lifestyle and did extensive research on it. Then we started the set work, and it took around 50-55 days to just finish the set and get it ready for shooting. We actually created the whole locality where people of all kinds of labour and religion live. Each and every house will have a characterization and a purpose. We also made sure the houses and the locality are cramped to bring more realism. We used real garbage, used plastic bottles, plastic covers and many such items to bring out the authenticity of the geography,” he added.

He also revealed that the slum setup is almost like a character in ‘Velaikkaran’ and it was producer RD Raja’s idea to recreate the entire slum area.

“A major portion of the story happens in a slum area where the hero and his friends are born, brought up and live. It was producer RD Raja who first told me ‘let us create the entire slum set up,” he added.

Muthuraj went on to add Sivakarthikeyan is a talented performer and ‘Velaikkaran will help him add a new dimension to his career.

“We also created a ‘Koovam’ around the locality to depict the lifestyle of a slum. The whole set was around 7.5 acres in area. We shot for around 50 days in this set. Without the producer’s immense support and co operation, this vision would not have been possible at all. ‘Velaikkaran’ will definitely take Sivakarthikeyan to the next level. Director Mohan Raja’s script, writing and detailing was fabulous. I am sure the audience will love ‘Velaikkaran’ and appreciate our monstrous efforts,” added Muthutraj.

Well, we wish the team of ‘Velaikkaran’ good luck and hope that the film does well at the box office. In case you did not know, ‘Velaikkaran’  is a thriller and deals with the food adulteration issue. Besides SK, it also features Nayanthara and Malayalam star Fahadh in the lead. Fahadh will be playing a negative role in what is the first Tamil film of his career. Sometime ago, Mohan Raja had revealed that he is the right choice for the film as he motivates his director to do a better job.

“After Thani Oruvan, I wanted to evolve as a better director and for that, I believed I had to come up with an even superior antagonist. So, instead of creating the character and casting the actor, I wanted to rope in an actor who would inspire me to create such an antagonist. With Fahadh on board, I knew I had the best and my challenge was to give him a role that would feed off of his thirst as a performer. It motivated me to create something great and after watching the output, I believe I am on the right track,” he had told a leading daily.

Speaking about Nayan’s role, he had said that her character is an integral part of the narrative and it would do justice to her image.

“I think an artiste should get into the skin of the character he/she is playing and Nayanthara does it brilliantly. She attends workshops for her films and I am not sure how many others do it. Her experience shows in every scene she performs and our challenge now is to make this film bigger and better than Thani Oruvan. I’ve to do justice to her image,” he had told a daily.
