Isayagnyani Ilayairaaja was conferred the nation’s second-highest civilian award Padma Visbhushan by the government of India two days ago. The veteran music composer was given the award for his contribution to the field of music in India and his works in South Indian cinema. Ilayairaaja interacted with the media recently in Chennai, after the announcement, and said that it was the love and greetings of his well-wishers and fans that has inspired him all his life to do great work. Many celebrities including top stars like Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth congratulated Ilayairaaja on being conferred the prestigious award. Ilayairaaja thanked everyone for the greetings and said that he is always grateful to all the love he is showered with.
“Since the time I was awarded Padma Vibhushan, until today, I have received a lot of greetings and messages from everyone including my fans. I would like to thank each and every one including my media friends. I feel that all these belong to my fans and well-wishers since I feel what I’m today is because of them. All this love has given me more inspiration. With the grace of god and your love, I will strive to do more,” said Ilayairaaja speaking at the press meet.
Ilaiyaraaja has won five National Awards, three for Music Direction and two for Background Score. He is also an instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. He first gave music for the 1975 Tamil film Annakkili and has given music for over 6500 songs. In 2010, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. His last National Film Award was for the Tamil film Tharai Thappattai, which he won for the background score. Ilaiyaraaja’s musical style was noted as he introduced Western style and combining it with Indian classical arrangements.
