ometime ago, veteran actor Kamal Haasan had spoken about violence in Hindu outfits and ruffled a few feathers along the way. In his hard-hitting article for a leading magazine, he had said that ‘Hindu extremism’ is on the rise and the right wing no longer merely indulges in intellectual discussions.

“In the past the Hindu right used to engage only in intellectual debates with the other religious groups. Once this approach started failing they have resorted to muscle power.  They too started indulging in violence. The Hindus cannot challenge others to show extremists among them since extremism has spread to that extent even among the Hindus,” he had stated.

As expected,  Haasan faced some criticism because of these comments and some groups referred to him as ‘anti-Hindu’. In a recent column for a magazine, the ‘Ulaga Nayagan’ addressed this and made it clear that he is not against any religion.

“It is their chosen path. I am not an enemy of Hinduism. I look at Islam and Christianity in a similar way. I am not anybody’s enemy and I follow the same policy with my welfare club,” he said.

On a related note, Haasan will soon be beginning his tour of Tamil Nadu in a bid to understand the needs of the people. Recently, he had said that the tour would be his way of self-discovery and learning.

“I intend to embark on a journey across the state from February 21, 2018, to truly understand as to what the needs of my people are? what is afflicting them? what their aspirations are? Further, this momentous journey of meeting people across Tamil Nadu is neither an act of rebellion nor is it a gathering for glamour,” Haasan had added.

On the work front, he is gearing up for the release of ‘Vishwaroopam 2’. Besides this, he has ‘Indian 2’ and ‘Sabash Naidu’ in his kitty.
