According to trade reports, Vijay’s Diwali release ‘Mersal’ has failed to beat his arch-rival Ajith Kumar’s ‘Vivegam’ in terms of box office performance. The film has grossed close to INR 5.49 crore at the Chennai box office in four days while the ‘Tala’ starrer had collected Rs 5.75 Crore in the same span. Interestingly, ‘Mersal’ has received a positive response from fans and critics alike. It goes without saying that the positive word of mouth could help it edge out ‘Vivegam’ on the days they come.
In case you did not know, ‘Mersal’ is an action-drama and has been directed by Atlee. Besides ‘Thalapathy’, it also features Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead. As far as ‘Vivegam’ goes, it is a spy-thriller and features Ajith in a stylish avatar. It had hit screens in May.
On a related note, ‘Mersal’ contains a scene which ridicules the central government’s GST scheme. And, needless to say, it has ruffled a few feathers. Recently, a BJP leader had lashed out the GST jibe and called it a ‘political move’.
“I haven’t seen the movie, but those who saw the movie say there were factual errors in what was said. The scenes on GST and Digital India have been written in such a way so as to create a wrong impression on the minds of people,” the BJP leader had added.
