Noted journalist and writer Gnani Sankaran passed away yesterday because of ill health, leaving a void in the world of journalism. Shortly after his unfortunate demise, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth offered his condolences to his family and said he was a fan of the work. ‘Thalaiva’ also added that he was deeply saddened by his work.

“Gnani is my friend and I’m his fan. He wrote what he felt was right without any hesitation or fear. I’m very saddened by his demise. And I give my deep condolences to his family. Let his soul find the peace,” he told reporters gathered outside Gnani’s residence.

Interestingly, Gnani was pretty vocal in his criticism of Rajinikanth’s political ambitions. Last year, he had said that the actor would have to project himself as an alternative to the Dravidian setup in order to be successful.

“The  talk about forming an alternative for the Dravidian parties is doing rounds since early 1980s. But nothing much has happened since. If Rajinikanth doesn’t position himself as an alternative to the Dravidian majors, he would soon be discredited,” he had told a leading daily.

On a related note, before entering politics full time, ‘Thalaiva’ is likely to finish all his professional commitments. At present, he has ‘2.0’ and ‘Kaala’ in his kitty. ‘2.0’ is a sci-fi thriller and is a sequel to ‘Enthiran’. In it, Rajini will be seen reprising his Chitti character from the first part. Besides Rajini, ‘2.0’ also has Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson in the lead.

As far as ‘Kaala’ is concerned, it is a crime-drama and will see him essay the role of a gangster. A Pa Ranjith directorial, it also features Huma Qureshi in the lead. Bollywood actor Nana Patekar too is a part of the cast band will be playing the antagonist in this one.
