The 1991 release ‘Thalapathy’ is regarded as one of the greatest Tamil films of all time. Directed by Mani Ratnam, It brought together two legends of Southern cinema—Rajinikanth and Mammootty—for the first time ever. The two stars impressed with their chemistry and ended up cementing their legacies even further. Now, more than two decades later, they are set to work together again.
According to a leading daily, the two will work together in a Marathi movie to be directed by newcomer Deepak Bhave. The film is being produced by politician Balkrishna Surve and he apparently convinced ‘Thalaiva’ to come on board. Well, this is big news and is bound to create a buzz amongst movie buffs.
Interestingly, Mammootty has tremendous respect for Rajini and had once said that he wanted to cast him in his directorial venture ‘Bhoothakkannadi’, however, the project never happened.
“Yes, it is true that I wanted to direct Rajinikanth in Bhoothakkannadi and I even narrated the story to him. But, the project never materialised. And I also didn’t want to pressure him into doing the film,” Mammootty had added.
On a related note, Mammootty will next soon be seen in ‘Masterpiece’. Besides this, he also has ‘Streetlights’, ‘Bilal’ and ‘Peranbu’ in his kitty. As far as Rajini is concerned, he currently has ‘2.0’ and ‘Kaala‘ in his kitty. ‘2.0’ is touted to be a sci-fi thriller and has been directed by Shankar. On the other hand, ‘Kaala’ is a crime-drama and is Rajini’s second film with Pa Ranjith.
