The anti-Sterlite protests in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district left many families broken. The long protest for the closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper unit in Tuticorin over pollution concerns turned violent on March 23. The fight turned ugly in which 9 people were killed. Many stars from the industry spoke their heart out over the protest and the loss of the families. However, someone’s gesture towards the families of the victims grabbed attention was of Kollywood actor Vijay.
The actor visited the families of those who died during the anti-Sterlite protests in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district. He also handed over Rs 1 Lac to each family. According to a report in India Glitz, a woman closed to the victim’s family shared an heart-touching story about the actor’s visit. The women revealed that how Vijay met all the families like their own son. She also revealed that how her family was condoled by the actor’s visit.
To people who don’t know, the protestors went on the rampage in the town about 600 km from Tamil Nadu capital Chennai and started Hurling stones and setting government vehicles and public property on fire.
Protesters blame the Vedanta group’s Sterlite plant for health problems and depleting water. The agitation against the factory started 100 days ago and took a violent turn after protesters got to know that the company is planning to expand the four lakh tonne per annum plant.
Earlier, from superstar Rajinikanth to Kamal Haasan, actor Sidharth and many others took to Twitter to condemn the shooting by the police.
Vijay was last seen in Mersal in which he was seen playing triple roles. Directed by Atlee, Mersal was one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema last year after having earned a total collection of Rs.110 crores. The film also starred Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and Samantha Akkineni as leading ladies. Mersal had actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah as the antagonist and was well appreciated for his role in the film.
