The ongoing dispute between the theatres and the Tamil Nadu state government regarding the 30% entertainment imposed by the government has had a large impact on the Tamil film industry. Cinema halls across the state of Tamil Nadu have shut down the theatres in protest against the tax resulting in the recently released films in halls not getting even a single show on Monday. Producers and actors have expressed their concern over this and say that they are in cross-fire between the theatre owners and the government.

In view of all this and to support the Tamil film industry in the cause, noted Tamil lyricist and writer Madhan Karky has decided to cut down his remuneration for his songs. The Baahubali lyricist posted a message on Twitter account this morning which read – “Until the revision, I am willing to reduce 15% off my remuneration for songs and dialogues, if that would help the industry.”

Madhan Karky also said he is disheartened to see Tamil cinema in such a condition. “Disheartening to see cinema halls closed. Hope the tax is revised and the industry gets back on track,” Madhan Karky wrote on his social networking page.

While Tamil Film Producers Council President, actor Vishal, is in pursuit to get this chaotic situation resolved sooner, the association of the theatre owners are in no mood to bow down to the government’s imposition of the extravagant tax.

Tamil Nadu Cinema Theatre Owners Federation president Abirami Ramanathan called for the strike on Friday late in the evening and said that all the owners of cinema halls stand united against the government’s decision. “A government order was passed on Friday, declaring that in addition to GST, the state will levy 30% entertainment tax which will be collected by local bodies. We have heard the pleas of the affected producers. We will discuss what needs to be done,Abirami Ramanathan had said.
