In a shocking incident, popular Tamil producer Ashok Kumar hung himself to death at his apartment in Chennai owing to the debts he had. Ashok Kumar is said to have taken loans on interest from financiers in Tamil Nadu and has been paying interest on the loans for more than 7 years now. Ashok Kumar is the cousin of actor-director M. Sasikumar and the two have worked on most many films in Tamil. Ashok Kumar is said to have written a letter in which he has blamed financier Anbuchezhian as the reason for his extreme step and has also mentioned that he has been insulted and harassed many a times.
Following Ashok Kumar’s death, M.Sasikumar, Ameer and Samuthirakani have lodged a police complaint in Chennai and have urged the police officials to take stringent action against financier Anbuchezhian. “He was my cousin. He was like my shadow, he was a co-producer. He used to manage my film and financial affairs,” M.Sasikumar was quoted as saying by TNM. Ashok Kumar has worked as an Associate Producer for films like Subramaniapuram and Nadodigal which were directed by his cousin M. Sasikumar.
Ashok Kumar’s death has shocked the Tamil film industry and many people are now speaking out about the financiers’ menace that has been affecting the film industry. “Only in cinema everybody can speak like heroes, but in reality, we are all struggling. The loans sharks want the interest and at the same time, they block the release of the movie. Producers’ council must sit and talk about these issues or else it would lose its purpose,” the report in TNM quoted director Ameer as saying.
