Veteran movie director CV Rajendran passes away

Hailing from a village near Madurantakam, Rajendran was related to another popular Tamil movie director C.V.Sridhar.

Veteran movie director C.V.Rajendran, who was ailing for sometime, passed away here on Sunday. He was 81. Rajendran has directed popular movies in Tamil like Galatta Kalyanam, Sumathi En Sundari and Raja starring Sivaji Ganesan and J.Jayalalithaa who later became Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister. He also directed other popular movies like Vani Rani, Sivagamiyin Selvam, Ponnoonjal, Maalai Sooda Va, Garjanai and several others in Tamil starring Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.

Many of the songs in his movies were big hits. Hailing from a village near Madurantakam, Rajendran was related to another popular Tamil movie director C.V.Sridhar, with whom he worked during his initial days. Apart from Tamil movies, Rajendran had also directed movies in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.

Rajendran started his career in films by assisting his cousin C.V.Sridhar in films like Kadhalika Neramillai. Rajendran introduced actor Prabhu, son of Sivaji Ganesan, in films with Sangili which was the Tamil remake of Hindi film Kalicharan. Rajendran has made films in all four South Indian languages and has worked with most of the top stars. Rajendran has also produced couple of films – Once More and Vietnam Colony. Rajendran also has the credit of directing former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha in couple of films.

The final rites of the veteran filmmaker will take place on Wednesday in Chennai since his children residing out of India are awaited for. Many film personalities and industry people have expressed their condolences.

Rajendran has worked more with Sivaji Ganesan in many films which include hits like Galatta Kalyanam, Sumathi En Sundari and Ullasa Paravaigal. Rajendran was handed the responsibility of launching Sivaju Ganesan’s son, Prabhu, who is now a seasoned actor in Tamil and Telugu films. Rajendran is one of the first people in the Tamil film industry who made films which were ahead of time and had long shelf life.
