Actor Vishal—who is a popular name in Kollywood—recently donated Rs 10 Lakhs towards the cause of establishing a Tamil Sangam chair at the Havard University and won hearts along the way. Speaking about his move, he said that Tamil being a classic language deserved to have a chair at the prestigious university. He went on to urge fellow Tamil speakers to do their bit towards fulfilling this goal.
“When the Ukrainian language spoken by three crore people, and the Celtic language spoken by one-and-a-half crore people have Chairs at the prestigious Harvard University, (which has been functioning for more than 380 years) — Tamil, one of the classical languages of the world which has ancient literature dating back to 300 BC, and spoken by eight crore people — should have one too! Other languages like Sanskrit, Hebrew also have Harvard Chairs,” he added.
Interestingly, previously actors such as GV Prakash, Suriya and Kamal Haasan too have contributed towards the cause. It will be worth watching whether these efforts help in fulfilling the target. At present, close to Rs 23 crore more is need to reach the Rs 40 crore mark.
On a related note, Vishal has been quite busy of late. He recently made his Mollywood debut with the Mohanlal starrer ‘Villain’ and added a new dimension to his career. In it, he played the role of a doctor and impressed fans. He has also been in the news because of his support for ‘Mersal’ which irked some BJP leaders by making fun of the GST initiative.
