There can be no denying that 2017 has been quite a turbulent year for Tamil star Simbu. To begin with, his highly ambitious ‘Anbanavan Adangadhavan Asaradhavan’ bombed at the box office while receiving unflattering reviews. Also featuring Shriya Saran in the lead, it was described by critics as ‘inconsistent’ and fared so poorly at the box office that the makers were forced to cancel its second instalment. Speaking about this debacle, director Adhik Ravicharan had said he was devastated by it and wanted to be left alone for a while. He had also said that he knew that AAA would flop, even before it hit screens.
“I didn’t respond to messages or phone calls. I just wanted to be left alone. My life changed overnight with that film. I didn’t respond to messages or phone calls. I just wanted to be left alone. I tried my best, but I totally understand why people didn’t like it. Now, I’m glad that I have already tasted failure. I have learned a lot more from it than I did with success,” Adhik had added.
A few months after the AAA debacle, STR received another jolt when AAA producer Michael Rayappan publicly lashed out at him and said that he had suffered financially because of his unprofessional behaviour.
“Simbu is the reason for huge loss Anbanavan Adangadhavan Asaradhavan (AAA) suffered. His lack of professionalism led me to suffer a huge setback. Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) should issue red card against the actor for the welfare of the industry, Simbu pleaded me to cast him in AAA. He said that he was almost bankrupt and had no money to even pay to his workers. He promised that he will give his best and ensure that AAA come good. After he was formally signed for the project, he hardly turned up for any discussion. Shooting was impossible for he hardly turned up. On many occasions, we had to pack up for the day without even canning a single shot. Though we paid him the remuneration, he never honoured his commitment. He would turn up at the end of the day with some excuse,” he had said during a press meet.
Replying to these allegations, he had said that the producer was making a mountain out of a molehill.
“I know you all want me to address the issue. I accept I am also at fault here, I agree my film AAA did not do well. For fans, we did a jolly film which did not work. It should have been a 1 part film but due to the budget issue, we had to make it a 2 part film. There have been issues but what bothered me was that the producer could have told me about it rather than blowing up the issue after 6 months You can stop me from acting, but you cannot stop me from entertaining my fans,” he had added.
Now, STR is in the news again. However, this time it is for a good reason. As it so happens, a photo of the dashing star with maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam is creating a buzz on the social media much to the delight of movie buffs. Judging by the photo, STR enjoyed the meeting a lot and lived every moment of it to the fullest. STR and Mani will soon be collaborating for an ambitious multi-starrer. Slated to go on the floors in early 2018, it also features Arvind Swami, Jyothika and Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead. Sometime ago, Aishwarya had said that it is an honour for her to be a part of the film.
On a related note, STR is currently awaiting the release of Santhanam starrer ‘Sakka Podu Podu Raja’ which marks his debut as music composer. We wish him good luck and hope that he finds success in the days to come.
