The latest film in Tollywood, Arjun Reddy, is being termed one of the path breaking films in the industry and is garnering a lot of appreciation for its narration and realistic portrayal of characters. Vijay Deverakonda plays the titular character of Dr Arjun Reddy Deshmukh who has issues with drugs, drinking and anger management. Both these play a part in his debacle as well as evolvement. While the romantic side of Arjun Reddy showers love on his leading lady Preeti, often referring to her as ‘My Girl’ (Naa Pilla), the other side of him is shown using cuss words involving women. While the romantic side of Arjun Reddy’s character was accepted with great respect by audiences, the other side received a lot of flak from many, including a few from the industry.
Vijay Deverakonda, in many of his interviews, tried to defend the usage of cuss words in Arjun Reddy, but most of his attempts seem to have fallen on deaf ears, and the actor seems to have given up explaining about it. While many women activist groups protested against the usage of swear words in Arjun Reddy and wanted the film banned, a different political group wanted the release of Arjun Reddy to be stopped because the film showed doctors in an incorrect manner.
Even after two weeks of release, Arjun Reddy is still the talk of the town and arguments are there around why the makers had to portray women in such an incorrect manner for gaining popularity.
A political leader in Hyderabad kicked off the protest against Arjun Reddy, tearing the posters of the film which had the lead actors Vijay and Shalini. Arjun Reddy and Vijay Deverakonda received support from controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma who, in his unorthodox way, gave the detractors of the film a message.
While all this was happening, Arjun Reddy managed to clock unbelievable numbers at the box office in India and overseas too. The US box office collections of Arjun Reddy show $1,681,996 which, when converted, is approximately INR 10.75 crore! And at the Indian box office, Arjun Reddy has grossed approximately INR 33.5 crores as on Monday.
While many are locking their horns about the portrayal of women in Arjun Reddy, the film has managed to grab attention from different film industries and will soon be remade in many languages. It remains to be seen whether Arjun Reddy is accepted or rejected by other regional Indian audiences and Bollywood.
To me, Arjun Reddy is the film which takes the route less chosen in the South Indian film industry. Arjun Reddy is definitely beginning of a new era in Telugu cinema!
