In just a few hours from now, 2017 will come to an end and usher in a new year. Come to think of it, the past 12 months have been extremely eventful and unforgettable for fans of Telugu cinema. On one hand, the ‘Baahubali2’ juggernaut put Tollywood on the global and redefined the very tenets of Indian cinema once and for all.
On the other hand, a relatively small film like ‘Anando Brahma’ became a surprise hit and proved that the audience is more that than willing to accept good films regardless of the scale. That said and done, 2017 would not have been so memorable had it not been for the memorable performances delivered by some talented actress. Here is a look at the actresses who stole hearts in Telugu cinema this year.
Anushka Shetty (Baahubali 2): A powerhouse performer in the truest sense, Anushka delivered a terrific performance in SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus ‘Baahubali 2’and left fans absolutely mesmerised. Everything about her portrayal of Devasena—right from her chemistry with Prabhas to her elegant screen presence—was just spot on and made the film a truly enjoyable affair. Talking about her role, she had thanked the director for giving her a character that highlighted the complete trajectory of a woman’s life quite well.
Taapsee Pannu (Anando Brahma): Taapsee—who has become a popular name in Hindi cinema because of ‘Pink’, returned to Telugu films this year with ‘Anando Brahma’ and delivered a lively performance. Directed by Mahi Raghav, this horror-comedy featured her in the role of a ghost and highlighted how ghosts are afraid of humans. Talking about the film, Taapsee had told Pinkvilla South that she chose it because of its refreshing plot.
“It has an unconventional storyline in a very conventional genre. Horror-comedy is something that is exploited to death in the South. I have myself been a part of such films. However, the concept of ‘Anando Brahma’ was so out of the box that I said yes to it after the first line itself,” she had added.
A commercial success, it is likely to be remade in Hindi pretty soon.
Sai Pallavi (Fidaa): Sai Pallavi—who became a sensation in Mollywood courtesy the success attained by ‘Premam’—entered the Telugu film industry with ‘Fidaa’ this year and became the newest heartthrob of T-town. In the romantic-drama, she played the role of a girl from Telangana and made fans go weak in the kneews because of her innocence. Talking about ‘Fidaa’, she had told a news agency that felt ‘overwhelmed’ by the love she received for her portrayal of Bhanumathi.
“It feels so overwhelming. I was really surprised by this kind of response, especially for my dialogues in the Telangana accent. I’m on cloud nine. Having learnt the Telangana accent, whenever I think of Telugu now, I can only relate with this accent,” she had added.
Nivetha Thomas (Ninnu Kori): The cute and adorable Nivrtha Thomas delivered a sincere performance in ‘Ninnu Kori’ and grabbed plenty of attention along the way. In the romantic-drama, she was seen alongside Nani and shared a crackling chemistry with him. Incidentally, she had worked with him in her first Telugu film ‘Gentleman’ as well.
Pooja Hegde (Duvvada Jagannadham): A Harish Shankar directorial, ‘Diuvvada Jagannadham’ was featured Pooja in a glamorous new avatar and helped her add a new dimension to her career. Sharing screen space with Allu Arjun, the lovely lady set the dance floor on fire and sent the temperatures soaring.
Kajal Aggarwal (Nene Raju Nene Mantri): Kajal Aggarwal won hearts because of her crackling yet tender chemistry with Rana Daggubati in ‘Nene Raju Nene Mantri’ and gave strong proof of her abilities as a performer. Sporting an elegant traditional look, she did full justice to her character and made the film even more enjoyable. Talking about working with her mentor director Teja, she had said that it was quite a nice experience.
“This is indeed a very special film for several reasons. First and foremost, I have teamed up with my mentor Teja sir for the second time after a decade. It’s been a pleasure working with him (Teja) as he encourages me to unlearn the nuances I have picked up over the span of my film career and to look at my character and this film with a fresh perspective,” she had told a leading daily.
The film was also released in Tamil and did well in in its dubbed avatar as well,
