According to a leading daily, Telugu superstar Anushka Shetty has agreed to play a character based on yesteryear star Bhanumathi in the eagerly-awaited Savitri biopic—Mahanati. Confirming this, a source said the makers wanted a mature performer for the part as the character will be an integral part of the film.
“Bhanumathi was a contemporary of Savitri and is known to have been quite competitive. Bhanumathi famously spoke about how Savitri became popular only by taking up films rejected by her. The role requires a mature performer who can carry off the veteran’s egoistic attitude, which was her famous character trait,” added the source.
In case you did not know, Bhanumathi is often described as the first superstar of Telugu cinema. She is best known for her bold attitude and turned down several films which ultimately went to Savitri. Her attitude was one of the reasons which helped Savitri scale new heights. It will be interesting to see Anushka essay her on the big screen.
Mahanati features Keerthy Suresh in the role of Savitri and has been directed by Ashwin Nag. The cast also features names such as Dulquer Salmaan and actor Samantha Akkineni. With Anushka coming on board, the film is bound to become even bigger.
On a related note, Anushka was last seen in Bhaagamathie and received praise for her work. Directed by G Ashok, the film featured her in a new avatar and served as strong proof of her ‘Lady Superstar’ status. Talking about the film, she had said that it was a contemporary drama rather than a period one.
“A few have misconstrued it as a ghost movie with a reincarnation theme. But it is a contemporary thriller and she is only a fictitious character. I play an IAS officer Sanjana, which is one of the most thought-provoking characters I have ever done. There was plenty of scope for performance, thanks to director Ashok garu who waited for me with the script from 2012,” she had told a leading daily.
Well, we wish her luck for Mahanati and hope that it does well at the box office.
