South Indian cinema has been having a great first quarter in 2018 with many movies turning out to be super hits. Films like AWE and Tholiprema have opened to grand release across the globe and have been clocking decent numbers at the ticket window. AWE released on February 16th 2018 worldwide and has been earning good collection. The first week witnessed AWE earning a collection of Rs.4.9 crores approximately and entered the second week to a grand opening. AWE! Has now crossed the Rs.10 crores mark worldwide and is now inching towards the $500k at the US box office.
Tholiprema, starring Varun Tej and Raashi Khanna, has been doing great at collections window. Tholiprema recently crossed the $1 million mark at the US box office and also touched the Rs.50 crores number in the Indian market. Directed by Venky Atluri, Tholiprema has turned out to be one of the biggest hits in Varun Tej’s career surpassing the previous hit, Fidaa.
Interestingly, Tholiprema was also the title of Varun Tej’s uncle, Pawan Kalyan’s super hit film which starred Keerthi Reddy in the lead role. Tholiprema was one of the biggest blockbusters in the career of Pawan Kalyan and was a musical hit too. Directed by A.Karunakaran, Tholiprema was released in 1999 and is still considered to be one of the biggest films in Pawan Kalyan’s career.
Tamil film Kalakalappu 2 opened to a decent release on February 9th, 2018 and has been faring a decent number at the box office. Directed and produced by Sundar C, Kalakalappu 2 stars Jiiva, Jai, Niki Galrani and Catherine Tresa in lead roles. The first week witnessed the film clocking the Rs.10 crores mark in Indian market while the rest of the world was nearing the $250k mark. Contrary to the title, Kalakalappu 2 is not a sequel to Kalakalappu which was released in 2012 starring Vimal, Shiva, Anjali, Oviya and Santhanam.
