Malayalam young sensation Dulquer Salmaan made his debut in Telugu with Mahanati which is a biopic in the iconic yesteryear actor Savitri. Although his role was not the central character in the film, Gemini Ganesan, Dulquer was more than happy to don the role. In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Dulquer said that he knew it would be challenging to tell the story of an iconic actor like Savitri. “We all knew that we were doing something very important and special. It was a big challenge to be able to tell the story of the legendary Tamil-Telugu actress Savithri, but I really believed in it. This was a role away from my home territory in Kerala, hence, it was an added challenge,” Dulquer Salmaan told DC.
Speaking about dubbing for himself right in his debut movie in Telugu, Dulquer says it was a challenging task. “Telugu was far more challenging than Tamil. I’ve been dubbing my dialogues in Tamil for some time now and am comfortable. In Telugu I had to understand and absorb what I was saying, practice the words and then dub. I also had to do it repeatedly to get it right for the language expert’s satisfaction,” Dulquer added further.
Being the son of Malayalam megastar Mammootty, Dulquer admits that it did have an advantage but he says it only helped him land a role in his first film. “I want to set my own footprints in this industry. There is nothing like a ‘born actor’. It’s all about honing my skills and choosing my own path. There definitely was an advantage in being my father’s son — my debut film was easier to land than if I had been a new comer,” the Bangalore Days actor added further. Dulquer Salmaan will also be making his debut in Hindi with Karwan which also stars Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar.
