Telugu actor and film critic Mahesh Kathi has found himself in the centre of a huge controversy for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Lord Rama and Sita Devi in a debate on a news channel.
“For me, Ramayana is just a book and Sri Rama is a character. He might be a great person but I believe he is a fool. I wish Sita lived with Ravana and maybe that would have brought her justice.” said Mahesh Kathi in the debate.
Hyderabad police have arrested Telugu film critic Kathi Mahesh for making derogatory comments against Lord Rama and Sita. Banjara Hills police took him into custody late on Monday. He would be produced before a magistrate later on Tuesday.
Mahesh, who also acted in a few films, was booked by the police two days ago on a complaint lodged by leaders of Hindu Janasakthi alleging that he made the offensive comments during a debate on a television channel.
A case was registered against him for hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity and hatred. Angry over Mahesh’s remarks, activists of some right-wing Hindu organizations on Saturday tried to attack him when he was at the office of a news channel in Banjara Hills.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered against Mahesh under IPC sections 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings) and 505 (intent to incite any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community.
Following the complaint, Mahesh Kathi was arrested and was interrogated for an hour almost. He was questioned and later released. He has also been served notice by the police asking him to appear before them whenever required as per the further investigation.
Meanwhile, while speaking to DC, Mahesh Kathi said, “I have my rights to express what I want and will put forward my opinions as I have a right to freedom of speech.”
