South Indian cinema has had an eventful 2017 with a lot of movies being released. There were quite a few movies which made some good numbers, but one film that left a long-lasting impression was Baahubali 2. The SS Rajamouli directorial broke al possible records in Indian cinema history in terms of collections worldwide and makes history. This year also witnessed the comeback of Mega Star Chiranjeevi into films with Khaidi No 150 which was an adaptation of Vijay’s Kaththi. And then we have Ajith’s Vivegam and Vijay’s Mersal which put Tamil cinema at a different level altogether in terms of collections, presentation and controversies too. We take a look back at the top grossers of South Indian cinema in 2017:
This magnum opus released on April 28, 2017 and what happened next was history. Baahubali 2 made a gross earning of more than INR 1700 crores worldwide. This number is a record in Indian cinema in terms of collection which seems to be untouchable in the near future.
Khaidi No. 150:
Mega Star Chiranjeevi made a comeback with this film which was an adaptation of Vijay starer Kaththi. The film grossed more than INR 150 crores worldwide and stands only next to Baahubali 2 in Telugu cinema.
Jai Lava Kusa:
Playing triple roles for the first ever time in his career, Jr NTR had the biggest release in Jai Lava Kusa. The film was directed by KS Ravindra and also starred Raashi Khanna and Nivetha Thomas as the leading ladies. Jai Lava Kusa made a gross collection of approximately INR 130 crores worldwide and this was even before the film ran for less than 25 days in theatres.
Directed by Siva, Vivegam had Ajith play an armed forces officer and sport a stylish salt n pepper look in the film. Vivegam grossed an approximate amount of INR 95 crores worldwide and stands as the highest grosser in Ajith’s career. Vivegam is the third-time association of director Siva and Ajith after having previously worked on Veeram and Vedalam.
Vijay’s biggest release, Mersal, is the highest grosser in Tamil cinema this year having clocked an amount of INR 145 crores. Mersal is also the first time that Vijay was seen playing triple roles in his career. Interestingly, Mersal is also the first Indian cinema to get its own emoji on Twitter.
This Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer stands as the highest grosser in Malayalam cinema this year with an approximate collections of INR 51 crores. Directed by Jay K, Ezra was one of thee best films in Malayalam this year.
The Great Father:
Mega Star Mammootty’s The Great Father was one of the films that was most waited for in Malayalam this year. The film, on release, had a grand opening and eventually went on to clock to INR 50 crores during its run at the theatres. The Great Father stands as the highest first day release in Mammootty’s career.
Kannada film industry has had a tipsy-topsy ride this year with few films releasing with a huge opening but dipping from day 2. But on film that sustained the hype was Raajakumara staring Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar and Priya Anand. Raajakumara had a gross collection of approx. INR 75 crores, highest for any film in Sandalwood so far.
